Metallica star lends hand at Bay Area food bank

The band has been making charitable donations for years, mostly behind the scenes, said Ulrich, a San Francisco resident who used to live in Tiburon. After realizing the band’s influence, made evident by its social media following, band members decided to be more public about their effort to end hunger and call upon fans to help out, Ulrich said.

Metallica launched its foundation in 2017, celebrating its inaugural day of service event last year. The 100 fans volunteering in San Francisco on Wednesday were among more than 3,000 fans lending their hands at some 50 food banks across the country.

Metalheads and hard rock fans sometimes get a bad rap, Ulrich said. But what he and his bandmates see in their fans is a loving, caring family, he said.
