Metallica’s James Hetfield is headed back to rehab to work on his addiction recovery. As the band takes a break from the road, rockers are offering the frontman words of encouragement and support online. Here’s what they have to say:
- Former Metallica bassist Ron McGovney wants Hetfield to know he’s just a phone call away amid his longtime battle with addiction. “James Hetfield has been a friend of mine long before Metallica, I’ve always looked up to him as a musician even when we were in high school,” he writes on Twitter. “I have been sober for two years. It’s not easy. I’m with you big guy.”
- Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum has also taken to to voice his support for Hetfield’s recovery process. “Take care of yourself my friend, you are a human being like everyone else that has real struggles,” he writes. “The disease of alcoholism doesn’t discriminate. You are very strong to take the steps needed to be healthy and happy. The rest can wait.”
- Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta is crediting Hetfield for his own commitment to sobriety. “Health is EVERYTHING. No tour or album or mountain of obligations is worth diving back into the abyss of booze & drugs,” he writes on Facebook. “I’ve toured heavily for over 20 years and would not have given up drinking if it wasn’t for James and the example he set.”
