Apple is releasing a new feature that will come in handy in the event of a user's death. It's called Digital Legacy and it was released in the newest iPhone update. It allows Apple users to choose specific people to be given access to their account in the unfortunate event of their passing. Up to five users can be selected to access data stored in the Cloud, such as photos or documents. Until the addition of this new feature, loved ones haven't been able to easily access the deceased person's phone or iCloud information without knowing their passcode.
This has prompted surviving family members to get a court order to access their digital records.
Here’s how to set it up:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top of the page.
- Select “Password & Security.”
- Choose “Legacy Contact.”
- Choose up to five family members or friends.
- You’ll receive an access code. Print it and keep it in a safe place with your other estate planning documents.
- Your Digital Legacy contacts will need to provide that code and a death certificate to access your account.
- Legacy contacts can visit Apple’s website to request access after you die.
