How Long American Couples Typically Date Before Getting Engaged

Thanks to dating apps and social media, there are more ways than ever to meet “the one” and fall in love. Whether it was love at first swipe or a real life meet-cute straight out of a rom-com, 94% of Americans say they’ve been in love, according to a new survey from Shane Co. It also uncovers the average relationship timeline for couples and how they really feel about falling in love.

The jewelry company’s poll of 2-thousand Americans reveals:

  • More than one in five (21%) believe in love at first sight, and 19% have actually experienced it.
  • Another 13% claim to have fallen for someone who they’ve never even met in person.
  • While the spark from an instant connection can be exciting, 27% feel that compatibility is more important than chemistry.
  • Proving that may be true, nearly a third (29%) of respondents are in a relationship with someone who started out as a friend.
  • For most couples, realizing they’re in love is a gradual process, but 18% say they knew they were in love after the first date.
  • Couples tend to introduce their new partner to their friends after they’ve been dating for an average of 3.7-months.
  • That’s also around the same time they realize those butterflies they feel are love, usually about 3.8-months into the relationship. But it takes them even longer to tell the other person.
  • Couples tend to decide to be exclusive around the 3.9-month mark.
  • After being together for an average of 4.4-months, they actually say “I love you” to each other.
  • Once they have the friends’ blessing and know they’re in love, meeting the parents is the next important milestone, which usually happens about 5.4-months into the relationship.
  • When they know they want to be together forever, one partner pops the question, around one year and three months after getting together.
  • But if things don’t work out and you end up breaking up with someone you just can’t seem to get over, there’s still hope. About 10% of those surveyed have managed to rekindle an old flame and give an ex a second chance.
